This Saturday I had the great opportunity to watch a really beautiful performance from the choreographer Arno Schuitemaker which I also met personally. Arno Schuitemaker is a famous Dutch choreographer and dancer based in Amsterdam who has played in more than 15 European theater stages.
The piece that was played was his new piece “If you could see me now”. There were many people who watched the piece and so were there a lot of different opinions on this whole performance but right now I will tell you my own.
The dancers had already started dancing very minimal, you could say private, while the Audience still searched for their corresponding places. The music was playing and the dancers just moved. The stage was “closed” from three sides which already gave of a feeling of something stuck, maybe a room, a club, a house party, or even something more abstract like your own head? It was up to you to decide. While everyone was seated the light was still very bright on the stage as well as in the auditorium. And so it continued for a few minutes, the three dancers grooved in their own style and rhythm but still interacted with each other, my focus was only on the dancers at this moment but soon it should change. After a few minutes the lights in the auditorium dimmed down, the music got louder and the dancers started playing with positions. They started wandering in space and creating different kind of geometric signs, triangles, a straight line where the person in the middle always changes, sometimes the geometric sign grew and sometimes it shrank down to a minimum of the needed space.
You may think that only three dancers could not really fill a big stage and you are right, three dancers who are dancing very minimally, private could not fill this stage in this performance but that wasn’t needed at all. The three different personalities you saw on stage, not only had an amazing presence and filled the room with enormous energy, but they created shadows, with the help of the lights, that danced with them. The whole performance was a private room for the dancers with three visible walls around them and one invisible. The stage was filled with duets and group dances consisting of only three dancers who only enjoyed every single moment on the stage but still managed to dance with their shadows so gracefully. The choreography pushed the simplest movement to the ultimate climax but never going over it, it was a masterpiece of repetition. The music was a continuous sound, the same beat, and rhythm over and over again but with slightly different changes. Sometimes one beat would miss and suddenly that beat comes back but is pitched higher, sometimes faster or slower until it slows down and leaves only a minimum of sound in the room, until the moment you only hear the footsteps of the dancers or just their breaths.
“If you could see me now” is for me a masterpiece of personality and individuality of each one of those three wonderful dancers, which really made me “hear” each and every movement they made. What I mean here with hear every movement is not the real sound of footsteps or the breathing like mentioned before but something way deeper than real sound can ever be.
And also a masterpiece of Arno Schuitemaker himself. He presented something of himself with this wonderful piece and I am really thankful for that.
